Antelope Canyon

Page, Arizona

Formed by millions of years of wind and water erosion, Antelope Canyon’s magnificent smooth and flowing shaped sandstone has made it one of the most famous slot canyons in the world.

Located within the LeChee Chapter of the Navajo Nation in Arizona, Antelope Canyon is actually two separate canyons, the upper canyon and lower canyon. The upper canyon, which the Navajo call Tsé bighánílíní ("the place where water runs through rocks"), is a narrow passage through 120-foot-high canyon walls. The lower canyon is known as Hazdistazí ("spiral rock arches") and is a shallower V-shaped canyon that is a more difficult trek for visitors. [Source Wikipedia] Read More about Antelope Canyon

Lake Havasu, Arizona

London Bridge is a bridge in Lake Havasu CityArizonaUnited States, that is the relocated 1831 London Bridge that spanned the River Thames in LondonEngland until it was dismantled in 1967. The Arizona bridge is a reinforced concrete structure clad in the original masonry of the 1830s bridge, which was bought by Robert P. McCulloch from the City of London. McCulloch had exterior granite blocks from the original bridge numbered and transported to America to construct the present bridge in Lake Havasu City, a planned community he established in 1964 on the shore of Lake Havasu. The bridge was completed in 1971 (along with a canal), and links an island in the lake with the main part of Lake Havasu City. [Source Wikipedia] Read More about Lake Havasu

San Francisco Peaks

Flagstaff, Arizona

The San Francisco Peaks are a volcanic mountain range located in north central Arizona, just north of Flagstaff. The highest summit in the range, Humphreys Peak, is the highest point in the state of Arizona at 12,633 feet (3,851 m) in elevation. The San Francisco Peaks are the remains of an eroded stratovolcano.[1] An aquifer within the caldera supplies much of Flagstaff's water while the mountain itself is located within the Coconino National Forest and is a popular site for outdoor recreation. The Arizona Snowbowl ski area is located on the western slopes of Humphreys Peak, and has been the subject of major controversy involving several tribes and environmental groups. Horse Shoe Bend

Grand Canyon, Arizona

Swirling around a 1,000-foot-high pedestal, the Colorado River bends in a smooth circle around a massive, craggy rock formation before flowing back through the Southwest. Wave Rock

Marble Canyon, Arizona

190 million years ago, one of the greatest geological formations began to take shape.

In the Coyote Buttes ravine, some 5,225 feet above sea level, stands Arizona's Wave Rock. Wave Rock has a remarkable undulating appearance, with massive sandstone structures stretched like taffy, and cinnamon color strata domes. It is, in a way, a geological snapshot in time, a still shot of the effect natural forces has on the environment. Read More

Grand Canyon

Arizona

A powerful and inspiring landscape, Grand Canyon overwhelms our senses through its immense size.

Unique combinations of geologic color and erosional forms decorate a canyon that is 277 river miles (446km) long, up to 18 miles (29km) wide, and a mile (1.6km) deep.

Averaging 8000 feet/ 2438 m above sea level, the North Rim rises 1000 feet/ 305 m higher than the South Rim, and is much less accessible. The North Rim has a short season. Lodging and restaurants are open from mid-May through mid-October each year.

Even in good weather the North Rim is harder to get to. It is 220 miles / 354 km by car from the South Rim, or 21 miles / 34 km by foot across the canyon by way of the North and South Kaibab Trails.

The Inner Canyon includes everything below the rim and is seen mainly by hikers, mule riders, or river runners.

There are many opportunities here for adventurous and hardy persons who want to backpack, ride a mule toPhantom Ranch, or take a river trip through the Canyon on the Colorado River (which can take anywhere from several days to three weeks - there are no one-day river trips through the length of Grand Canyon).

Canyon de Chelly

Northeast of Arizona (Navajo Nation)

If These Walls Could Talk...

They would tell you that for nearly 5,000 years, people have lived in these canyons - longer than anyone has lived uninterrupted anywhere on the Colorado Plateau. Their homes and images tell us their stories. Today, Navajo families make their homes, raise livestock, and farm the lands in the canyon. The National Park Service and Navajo Nation are actively working together to manage park resources.
